Shipping Recommendations for Seeds, Herbs, Preserves, Fresh Fruit and Meats

Seeds

By the packet:

  • Offer Free Shipping on seed packets
  • Use the Minimum Order setting so customers have to buy 2 or more packets to meet the minimum, and then roll half your shipping cost into each seed packet
  • If possible, offer a variety of seeds to choose from so it will be easy for customers to meet your minimum order fee

Bulk or heavier weight seed:

  • Use the Minimum Order setting
  • Offer sizes that will fit into a USPS priority mail box
  • Price your shipping at no more than 30% of the product cost

Tea bags and Loose Herbs

  • Offer free shipping for light weight items
  • Use the Minimum Order setting
  • Plan to use a flat-rate box so that your shipping cost is predictable

Preserves

  • Use the Minimum Order setting
  • Offer bulk quantities that you know will fit into a flat rate box
  • Price your shipping at no more than 30% of the product cost

Fresh fruit

  • Offer free shipping when possible
  • Or, price your shipping at no more than 20% of the product cost
  • Offset the cost of shipping into the price of the product
  • Offer consistent communication about the shipping timeline (People often need to know the delivery date, so that their order does not sit on a porch too long).

Meat

  • If you sell smaller cuts or lower priced items, use the Minimum Shipping setting
  • Carefully calculate your packaging costs and include it the cost of the product
  • If shipping within state is significantly cheaper than shipping a distance, you may consider creating SKUs for "in state" and "out of state".
  • Offer consistent communication about the shipping timeline (people often need to know the delivery date, so that their order does not sit on a porch too long).
